About this deal

Palate: A rich taste that gradually envelops the mouth with the natural sweetness and complex flavour of the rice. In Japanese, Roku translates as number six. Inside every bottle of Roku Gin, you will find six very special botanical that are sourced in Japan. I made duplicate martinis, one with Beefeaters, and one with Roku. It isn't even close, really. I did drink them both simultaneously, so I'm feeling pretty good right now! Fake Japanese whisky is flooding the market thanks to its high quality and strong demand for this type of whisky. To spot fake Japanese whiskey, take note and be aware of the following points: I don't have a lot of experience with gin, and this is the 4th I've tried, and it's my favorite so far. My previous ones were Beefeater, Bombay Sapphire, and Aviation.

In Japanese, roku means “six.” Suntory’s take on gin is called “six” after six quintessentially Japanese botanicals. Firstly, there’s green tea two ways: sencha and gyokuro. Cherry, also two ways: blossom and leaves. These six botanicals are each distilled individually. There’s another eight traditional botanicals bringing the grand total up to fourteen. There are two variations of Roku gin. One from Duty Free stating SELECT EDITION in a Gold band on the front The other one is available from shops and online. Massive difference between the two. Roku means “six” in Japanese which refers to the six local, seasonal botanicals which complement the eight traditional gin botanicals (juniper, coriander seed, angelica root & seed, cardamom, cinnamon, bitter orange, lemon peel). This gives this type of alcohol a distinctly Japanese character. Japanese botanicals are the sakura flower (cherry blossom), sakura leaf, sencha tea, gyokuro tea, sansho pepper and yuzu peel.

Traditional gin botanicals also featured include the likes of juniper, orange peel, lemon peel, coriander and cinnamon, among others. Sakura flower, Sakura leaf, Yuzu peel, Sencha tea (green tea), Gyokuro tea (refined green tea) and Sansho pepper. Six Japanese botanicals cultivated over four seasons, the six Japanese botanicals have been carefully selected to create ROKU, Japan's authentic craft gin.

The warm, pungent flavour of ginger further highlights the unique quality of the Japanese botanicals. Owning, opening and drinking this gin is a whole experience - from the aroma you get when you open the bottle and how special it feels when poring your first drink to taking your first sip - an utter delight. My only real complaint is the low juniper (and even there, I feel this has more than many of the modern gins out there). If they were to make a style with a heavier juniper profile, that would almost certainly become my absolute favorite gin! You can try serving Roku Gin in a gin and tonic with a ginger garnish, which accentuates the citrus notes.

I made an amazing negroni (1:1:1) with Roku Gin, Noilly Prat SV, and Campari. Gin and tonic was also good but I used an “artisanal” brooklyn made tonic, so that could have changed the flavor too. Sometimes, fakers of Roku Gin are overly enthusiastic and overfill the bottle. This can be a bit hard to spot because it doesn’t happen all the time.

Does the plastic or foil seal look uniform or neat? Fakers of Roku Gin often skip over the seal part by either using clear plastic or with crooked writing as this is something most people overlook. The first thing you should look at is the label on the Roku Gin bottle. Often, the print quality, resolution, text and colour is a bit off and looks even more so when compared side by side to the original. These four seasons include the beautiful sakura leaf and sakura flower for spring, sencha tea and gyokuro tea for summer, sansho pepper for autumn and yuzu peel for winter.Bartenders would be well advised against treating Roku Gin as a mixing gin well suited for all uses. It’s a challenging gin that can be discordant in some applications. Overall Palate:Complex, multi layered, yet harmonious flavour of various botanicals. Traditional gin taste in the base, plus characteristic Japanese botanical notes with yuzu as the top note. Smooth and silky texture. This is one of the loveliest gin’s I have tasted. The experience I have had with other types of gin is that it has taken a few sips to adapt to the taste - I don’t get that with this gin, it is instantly tasty.
