About this deal

Raymond Briggs, creator of The Snowman, introduces us to a rather grumpy Father Christmas in this brilliantly tongue-in-cheek festive tale.

Join Father Christmas on his busiest night of the year in this 50th anniversary edition of the hilariously irreverent Christmas classic! J.R.R. TOLKIEN (1892-1973) is the creator of Middle-earth and author of such classic extraordinary works of fiction as 'The Hobbit', 'The Lord of the Rings', and 'The Silmarillion.' His books have been translated into more than fifty languages and have sold many millions of copies worldwide. So much appealed about his work and made me feel – half a generation after it was written – that I’d found something unfamiliar and uniquely genuine and true. He had a drive to tell stories that allowed the reader to inhabit the real world more profoundly and reflectively than merely living in it allowed. That Tolkien had a facility for creating his own stories and universes is well known, and the same could be said for languages. What is less known is his facet as an illustrator, and although he was not very prodigal, he illustrated quite a few of his works at one time or another. So for Christmas, he put all this together and wrote a reply letter from Father Christmas himself to his son. That was in 1920, and until 1943 he continued to send letters to his children. I'd have questioned the premise that he needs or wants to make a profit, but my husband came up with an excellent answer: branding, licensing, and franchising.

Get in Touch

Get ready for an enchanting winter break to Finnish Lapland, where you can explore the magical hometown of Santa Claus. You’ll have the chance to chase the northern lights*, go for a sleigh ride through the snow, and meet Father Christmas himself. Dara McAnulty. Photograph: Four Communications/PA Dara McAnulty: ‘He believed that not just adults, but all of us, deserved to know the truth’ After The Snowman, I moved on to Father Christmas, which brought me so much laughter and joy, and then When the Wind Blows, which is astonishing. The story of Jim and Hilda, wonderful characters living through nuclear war, hit me so brutally, as all his work did. The first letter is from 1920, the last one from 1943 (that ones written during the war were especially touching). All of them are charming and full of warmth and kindness.

I would recommend a print copy, since the pictures in this are wonderful, but if you have an iPad, you won’t miss out on the lovely colours this offers. The reindeers will be the big barn and you can learn all the interesting facts and maybe feed them some food,Every December an envelope bearing a stamp from the North Pole would arrive for J.R.R. Tolkien's children. Inside would be a letter in strange spidery handwriting and a beautiful coloured drawing or some sketches. The letters were from Father Christmas.

His Father Christmas turned an icon into a human being: a grumpy, hard-working man of simple but necessary pleasures including one of the first sitting-on-a-loo pictures in a children’s book. Father Christmas bridged the gap between comics and picture books, and joined the tradition of Tintin and Asterix. It announced an uncanny ability in Briggs to talk to audiences of all ages. How about spending the night in a room made of ice and snow? You can do just that at the Arctic SnowHotel in Rovaniemi and SnowCastle in Kemi. What’s more, visiting Lapland in winter gives you the best opportunities to see the northern lights. At this time of year, the night skies are really dark, which means you can make out the colours of the aurora more clearly. Another option is to stay in Kemi. Come here for a Christmas or New Year’s break and enjoy festive activities, including a day trip to Santa Claus Village. The journey takes 1 hour 30 minutes each way. This the perfect Christmas read, just saying, get your hands on this book now, and either read it yourself or give it to your loved ones!))

Barnett, Laura (16 December 2014). "How I made: Raymond Briggs on Father Christmas". The Guardian . Retrieved 10 August 2022. Briggs was a visual storyteller, in the truest sense. People tend to forget that The Snowman was a wordless book, and that’s because the story that the images convey is so vivid. That is a very hard thing to pull off, but Briggs made it look easy. Which is, of course, what geniuses do. If you’d like to be as close as possible to Santa Claus Village, the best place to stay is Rovaniemi. Here you have everything you need: an international airport, shops, restaurants, and more.
