About this deal

We suggest that you install a vapor barrier for your hardwood floor, as it will protect your flooring and prevent mildew and moisture from seeping into your wood. This can be in the form of a special type of glue. We admire your tenacity. However, before we get started, let’s take a look at the types of floors most prone to groans, moans, creaks and squeaks and potential remedies. Board-to-board The process is a little longer and more expensive than other methods, but the results are the most reliable. What You’ll Need Hi, I probably should have thought to join here before, not because I have loads of advice to offer but as a novice doing a (mostly) DIY 4 bed loft conversion hopefully, I can hopefully get some advice.

Still have questions? Here’s some common questions that come to mind when it comes to floorboards generally and my answers. Should you fill gaps in floorboards to improve insulation? Boards were not acclimatised: New flooring must be allowed to acclimatise to the space it is being laid in before being fixed. If not, boards will expand and contract once laid meaning they will rub together and creak when walked on. If this is your problem, boards are likely to be damaged and will need replacing with new (fully acclimatised) boards. Basketweave Pattern: if you are working with oak or maple boards this is your go-to pattern, whereby they are installed parallel or diagonally to the walls in the room. Floorboards are the foundations of your room. Screwing in your floorboards for me are the best, longest last approach to keeping your floor anchored to the ground. They are also the most flexible when it comes to accessing underneath them. Here you have to be very careful. Make sure the screws are short and not long enough to go through the top of the flooring. You can end up making the problem even worse if the screws are too long.

Exceptional Sound Reduction: With its high mass properties of 1200kg/m 3, SilentBoard effectively minimizes airborne noise penetration and transfer through separating floors. Experience a quieter environment and enhanced acoustic performance, allowing you to enjoy peace and quiet within your space. We recommend using a stud finder, taking a hammer and tapping the carpet to listen for the difference in sound, or using the tool found in your Squeak No More kit. There’s a special sc Step Three: Use a floor repair kit You also need moisture and humidity readings of the concrete, as this will affect how the wood expands and contracts. If the readings are fairly high, you will need to ensure that you buy hardwood floor glues that have a vapor barrier to protect the wood. You also need to make sure that the substrate is completely clean and dry. An additional advantage of Stopgap is that once it has been fitted the natural shadow of the gap itself will make it almost invisible to the eye ensuring that the natural finish of your floor is not in any way compromised. Papier Mâché Once you get to the last board cut to size down their length allowing for your expansion gap. Add expansion wedges to tighten up the joints and allow the glue to set. When the glue has set remove all of your expansion wedges. Fit any beading, skirting or architrave to cover your expansion gaps and complete your oak floor fitting.

Papier Mâché

SilentBoard, crafted on our behalf by STS, comprises Portland cement, cellulose fibres, sand, water, and other minor aggregates. These construction boards meet and exceed resistance, safety, and durability requirements in building construction. Unlike chipboard, plywood, or other timber-based flooring options, SilentBoard remains unaffected by moisture, resisting shape change, rot, and expansion. If you are filling gaps in your floorboards you may also be interested to see our replacing a timber floor project, our sanding a timber floor project and timber floor finishes project. Timber floors contract and expand throughout the course of their life. These movements cause alternative floorboard sealants such as papier-mâché and in some cases also (especially over time) wood filler and silicon to become ineffective and lose their sealant value. DraughtEx will mimic the movement pattern of the timber and therefore remain in place retaining insulation. If the boards are being fixed directly onto timber or steel joists they should be a maximum of 600mm centre. To achieve an acceptable finish it is important that floor joists are level. We would recommend you also incorporate Green Glue Joist Tape to minimise squeaking. For a long-lasting hold, buy high quality screws as mentioned above, and put in the time to protect your floorboards to prevent squeaking and creaking in the long run. Remember if you are fitting wooden flooring on top, the levelling of your floor is extra important and contributes to overall finish.

Bad nailing: If you discover that whoever fitted the floor has spaced the nails too far apart or missed the joists altogether, you have two choices: remove the original fixings and replace them; or, preferably, leave them in place and screw the board to the joist where it is loose. Here is another decision you will need to make: Should you install prefinished or unfinished hardwood boards? As far as the quality and beauty of the flooring are concerned, there is no difference between the two, but both of them have their specific characteristics. So, what are the main differences between the two options, and which one should you choose? Aside from the hardwood flooring options and methods of installation, the substrate also plays a role. The substrate is the structure or material that you will be laying your flooring onto. This is imperative as it will dictate the type of adhesive you will require and the method of installation that will be necessary to use. The three methods for installation are as follows; gluing, nailing, and a combination of both gluing and nailing. Also known as ‘deflection,’ these squeaks are localised and usually caused by the ends or sides of boards rubbing together. Excess moisture, improper subfloor preparation and/or poor installation contribute to the creaks. These boards might also move when you stand on them. Okay – so when it comes to putting the screws in screw in vertically, into the joists and below floor level. If you need to smooth down any uneven areas use a belt sander or an orbital sander to get the job done.We have heard many other suggestions for filling floorboard gaps and have tried most of them. Papier Mache for example sounds like a great idea but you may have to take a couple of months off work to do it! Although a very time consuming job, it can be done quite cheaply as all you need is some wallpaper adhesive and some old news papers. There are a number of things to consider before you can begin laying down a new floor. These include the type of substrate onto which you will be laying your flooring, the type of flooring you choose to use, the species of wood and finish of those wooden boards, as well as the pattern of the wood grain. Although these options do have the advantage of being quite flexible, over time they will in most cases separate from the edge of the boards and eventually fall through the gap. As you begin to lay the floor take your boards from 4 or 5 boxes to ensure that you maintain an even mix of colours on your floor. Make sure that you try to use any board with defects at the start and ends of your runs. Cut defective pieces off where necessary. Lay down the first 3 rows without glue and use plastic wedges to maintain 1.5mm expansion gap between the boards. Make sure your joints between board lengths are random with no joints within 200mm of each other. This will maintain the look and strength of the final product. Pull a string line down the length of your boards to make sure everything is straight. Adjust your gaps if you need to. Gluing Your Oak Floor Down
