James Newton Howard’s score seems to pack more of a punch as well, providing a much fuller-sounding atmosphere. Their genuine approach to the script is ultimately what sells this story and keeps viewers invested. Visions of Light – Director of photography Jan de Bont (who went onto direct other 90’s films like Twister and Speed) is interviewed here along with chief lighting technician Edward Ayer.

Flatliners isn't a terrible movie, in fact for most of its running time it is a pretty entertaining one that features some interesting production design and a strong soundtrack. In Hereafter, first assistant director John Kretchmer speaks about getting into the film business, becoming an assistance director, working with Schumacher for the first time on D. Yes, it’s dark and there are a lot of shadows, but in what is kind of a precursor to Schumacher’s Batman films there is a wide spectrum of colors on display and even during the film’s darkest moments those vivid colours effortlessly leap from the screen.

The booklet features two excellent essays, one by Amanda Reyes, which provides background for Near-Death Experiences with references to documentation, and another by Peter Tonguette, his essay briefly examining the spiritual aspects of the film.

Regardless, Flatliners is a film that gets better with age because it’s more about the “what if” than the “what is. It's easy to see how the others would be coaxed into going along with him on what is, in all reality, a pretty reckless endeavor. I’m glad Arrow is putting this out because I haven’t seen it since it’s release when I was an impressionable teenager and I look forward to seeing if the effects and the “science” of the film holds up because we know the haircuts won’t. Assistant director John Kretchmer (14-minutes) explains what an assistant director does (the ship’s first mate to the ship’s captain) before getting into some of the technical challenges around the film’s photography.Stylishly photographed by Jan de Bont (Basic Instinct) and featuring a cast of Hollywood’s hottest talent – including Kiefer Sutherland (Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me), Julia Roberts (Secret in their Eyes) and Kevin Bacon (Wild Things) – Flatliners is the ultimate life-and-death thrill ride.

Arrow is using an all-new 4K restoration performed by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment that was sourced from the 35mm original camera negative.

They learn about themselves, how their past has shaped them, but so too do they get a rush from the experience. Schumacher frequently falls into the trap of not being able to deliver a decent ending to his movies – and indeed cheats here by dismissing potentially devastating medical side effects with a joke – but the ride he offers along the way is more satisfying than not, and this is one of his more rewarding efforts. Joel Schumacher’s sure-handed direction gives the film a unique quality that the other ghostly-themed films released in that era don’t really have. Though its flaws can sometimes be obvious, the storyline is decent enough to keep us involved and there is some suspense here even if it all falls apart in the end.

All those neons now have real depth and it really does add to the look and sound of the film giving greater clarity and depth to the many night time scenes. The inspiration for the story, touched on in the commentary, comes from the term “accountability” being thrown around during the Iran-Contra scandal, and his friend dying for 15-seconds (in the commentary Reesman and Eyer mention his friends was actually dead for a minute-and-fifteen seconds and that it was from an allergic reaction to anesthesia). As someone who loves clever practical effects, “Visions of Light” with de Bont and chief lighting technician Edward Ayer ( Die Hard) is particularly fascinating as they discuss little things, like how they achieved the shadow affect when Nelson is sitting alone in his apartment holding his screwdriver defensively or the use of a projector to get the splintered light just so on David’s face before being confronted by younger Winnie.Visions Of Light is a new video interview with director of photography Jan de Bont and chief lighting technician Edward Ayer that runs just over eighteen minutes. Flatliners was first released on Blu-ray by Sony in 2007 and later reissued by Mill Creek in 2014, who utilized the same acceptable but ultimately mediocre transfer.
