Description

Besides the 96-core Threadripper Pro 7995WX, the Precision 7875 we accessed also had 512GB of ECC RAM, Windows 11 Enterprise, and two Nvidia RTX 6000 Ada Generation professional GPUs. Testing those crown-jewel GPUs was awfully tempting, but for the sake of staying on task, we focused exclusively on CPU testing. So if AMD comes up again with a HEDT TR 7000 series, that will be to counter the low models of the INTEL W-3300 and W-2400 series and indirectly "gap-protect" the 7950X revenues, while not going all the way up in terms of number of cores. In AMD shoes that's what I would do. Based on AMD Labs testing as of January 31, 2022 using the Ansys CFX benchmark to compare the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5995X reference system configured with 8x32GB DDR4, NVIDIA Quadro RTX A5000, 1TB SSD, Win 11 vs. a similarly configured BOXX APEXX4 workstation with an Intel® Xeon® W-3375. Results may vary. CGP-26 Simultaneously, AMD is also introducing the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Series processors, returning to the HEDT environment for the first time since 2020. Maintaining AMD’s high standard for creative and professional users, the Ryzen Threadripper 7980X processor offers the most computing power possible in an enthusiast desktop, 1 with exceptional multi-threaded performance for users who demand the best. These processors, also built with the AMD “Zen 4” architecture and offering up to 48 PCIe® 5.0 lanes available to desktop users, feature up to 64 cores and 128 threads for an unprecedented level of performance and efficiency. Stepping out of its supposed 'exclusivity deal' with Lenovo, who had the first rights to Threadripper Pro inthe ThinkStation P620, motherboard vendors have started showing off some of its WRX80 motherboard models designed for AMD's Ryzen Threadripper Pro processors. Some of the benefits of the new platform over standard Threadripper include eight-channel memory and up to 128 x PCIe 4.0 lanes, which is double that of the non-Pro variants. While this sounds like EPYC, it sits between the two with only 2 TB DRAM support. It's time to showcase what we know, including three new models based on the WRX80 chipset.

Our testing focuses on the one Ryzen Threadripper Pro processor we've managed to get our mitts on so far, the 3955WX, a 16-core/32-thread chip that is a sensible choice for any kind of demanding workflow. Our test platform is the Lenovo ThinkStation P620 with Windows 10 Pro, 32GB of DDR4-3200 ECC memory, a 512GB PCI Express 3.0 SSD boot drive, and a 5GB Nvidia Quadro P2200 graphics card. Based on AMD Labs testing as of January 31, 2022, using the Chaos V-Ray v5 (Update 1.1) benchmark tool to measure CPU rendering performance of an AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5995WX reference system configured with 8x32GB DDR4, NVIDIA Quadro RTX A5000, 1TB SSD, Win 11 vs. a similarly configured BOXX APEXX4 workstation with an Intel® Xeon® W-3375. Results may vary. CGP-05. The 280W Threadripper Pro 3975WX weighs in at 32 cores and 64 threads that run at a 3.5 GHz base and 4.2 GHz boost, which is significantly lower than the Threadripper 3970X's 3.7/4.5 GHz base/boost. The chip has a significantly higher boost frequency than its 32-core EPYC 7542 comparable (+800MHZ) but a lower base frequency.

Introduces new Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7000 WX-Series processors, the ultimate workstation platform from OEMs including Dell Technologies, HP, and Lenovo –

We look forward to putting the Threadripper Pro 5995WX through its paces over the coming months and years, and we hope we can take a look at the 5975WX soon as we feel that model is better suited to our use case. Shopping Shortcuts:If you're familiar with the Threadripper 3000 processors, then this new 5000 series won't offer any surprises, it's basically the same deal. The layout is much the same and the power consumption is much the same, therefore the cooling requirements are about equal. This is the most expensive AMD Ryzen CPU you can buy, which as you might suspect is also the fastest and most powerful Ryzen CPU currently in existence. Not even upcoming Zen 4 CPUs will change that, at least not when talking about core-heavy workloads. The supporting chipsets are also different. The Threadripper Pro WX-series uses the new WRX90 chipset, while the Threadripper X-series employs the TRX50 (a follow-on from the last consumer Threadripper chipset, the TRX40). Intriguingly, it’s possible to install a Threadripper Pro WX in a TRX50 motherboard, including the 96-core giant we’re testing, though it’ll limit the PCIe lanes and memory channels to what the Threadripper X-series platform supports. The reverse scenario—a Threadripper X CPU on a WRX90 motherboard—won’t work, though, due to the chip having some different pin-outs.

Moving on, 3DMark CPU Profile’s single-thread test showed the Dell performing 16% better than the Lenovo, a respectable generation-on-generation gain. Again, the higher turbo speeds and newer architecture paid off. The Dell also showed around a 20% gain in the two-, four-, eight-, and 16-thread tests, though clearly the “max” threads score suggests this app doesn’t leverage these CPUs to their potential. Unveils Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Series processors, the world’s fastest desktop processor, for the world’s fastest desktop platforms for enthusiasts –

We're only looking at an 8% improvement in the 7-zip file manager decompression test for the 5995WX over the 3990X. But this time removing the power limits resulted in a slightly more impressive 9% performance increase. The Xeon W-2400 Series is classified as a ‘mainstream’ workstation processor with eight models ranging from 6 to 24 cores and 4-channel DDR5 4800 memory.
